An MOU between the Australian Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research and Italy's Ministry of Economic Development to facilitate bilateral cooperation on the implementation of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), the world's largest radiotelescope, was signed in 2009. With regard to the SKA project, an Arrangement was also signed in 2012 between Italy's National  Institute for Astrophysics, INAF, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization for scientific cooperation in the SKA project. Cooperation in the search for dark matter and the detection of gravitational waves has been endorsed between Italy's National Institute for Nuclear Physics, INFN, and Australian groups working in these two sectors. Universities Australia maintains an updated database of cooperation agreements between Italian universities as well as links with its Italian counterpart CRUI, the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities.
